BIM Architecture, Structure, MEP, or Interior — Which One Is Actually Right for You?

We wrote a general guide to getting started with online BIM training a little while back, and the most common follow-up question we got wasn’t “should I do this” — it was “which one do I actually sign up for.” Fair question. Five programs with similar-sounding names (BIM Architecture, BIM Structure, BIM MEP, BIM Interior, and a separate Interior Design Course) is confusing if nobody explains the difference. So here it is, plainly.

Part of the confusion is honestly our fault as an industry, not just a WAA-specific naming problem — most training providers assume everyone already knows the difference between a discipline (Architecture, Structure, MEP) and a specialty (Interior). They’re not the same kind of category, but they sit on the same course list, so it looks like a flat menu of five equal options when it isn’t. Once you see the actual logic behind it, the choice usually becomes obvious pretty fast.

The three “BIM” disciplines aren’t interchangeable

BIM Architecture, BIM Structure, and BIM MEP all use the same software — Autodesk Revit — but they’re not the same course with a different label slapped on. They exist because a real building project splits into these exact three disciplines, and each one models something different inside the same coordinated file.

BIM Architecture is the one most people start with, and for good reason — it covers the core Revit skills everyone needs regardless of specialty: interface, modeling tools, walls, floors, roofs, documentation. If you’re an architecture student, a draftsman, or genuinely unsure which discipline fits, this is the entry point. Almost everyone who eventually moves into Structure or MEP builds on top of this foundation first, because the interface and modeling logic you learn here carries over directly — you’re not starting from zero a second time.

BIM Structure is built for people with a structural or civil engineering background — foundations, columns, framing, reinforcement basics, and how a structural model coordinates with the architectural one above it. If your degree or your day job involves structural calculations, drawings, or site supervision on the structural side, this is the more direct fit. In practice, this is often the program that saves the most rework down the line — a structural clash caught in the model costs nothing; the same clash caught on-site costs time, material, and an uncomfortable conversation with the contractor.

BIM MEP covers mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems — ducting, piping, circuits, fixture placement, and the coordination work that catches clashes between MEP and everything else before they become a problem on-site. This one tends to attract mechanical and electrical engineers, and increasingly, site engineers who are tired of MEP clashes getting discovered after concrete is already poured — which, if you’ve worked on an actual site, you already know is a genuinely painful and expensive way to find out a duct doesn’t fit where it was supposed to go.

None of these three are “better” than the others — they’re just different rooms in the same building, and which one you need depends on which room you’re going to be working in professionally.

The one everyone actually gets confused by: BIM Interior vs. the Interior Design Course

This is the pairing that generates the most questions, and honestly, the naming doesn’t help.

BIM Interior is a Revit-based course. You’re learning to model interior spaces — partitions, ceilings, furniture families, finishes, interior documentation — inside the same BIM workflow as the architecture and structural teams. It assumes you want the software skill specifically, usually because you’re already working in or around architecture and need to produce interior documentation that stays coordinated with the rest of a project.

The Interior Design Course is a different animal entirely. It’s not software-first — it’s a design-fundamentals program: space planning, color theory, material selection, lighting, furniture layout, and how to actually present a concept to a client. If you want to become an interior designer rather than a Revit operator who happens to touch interiors, this is the one. Software comes up, but it’s not the spine of the course the way it is in BIM Interior.

A rough way to put it: BIM Interior teaches you to model what’s already been designed. The Interior Design Course teaches you to design it in the first place.

A quick self-check, if you’re still not sure

  • Complete beginner, want the broadest foundation → BIM Architecture. It’s the safest starting point precisely because it doesn’t lock you into a specialty yet.
  • Structural/civil engineering background → BIM Structure. You already think in loads and members; this just gives you the software to model that thinking.
  • Mechanical/electrical engineering background, or tired of MEP clashes on-site → BIM MEP. If you’ve ever watched a duct run into a beam that wasn’t supposed to be there, you already understand why this exists.
  • Already work in or around architecture, need Revit-specific interior modeling skills → BIM Interior. This assumes you’re producing documentation, not just concepts.
  • Want to actually design interiors — concept, space planning, materials — not just model them → Interior Design Course. Software is a tool here, not the main event.
  • Draftsman looking for the single highest-leverage upgrade → BIM Architecture first, almost always. It’s the one that opens the most doors from a pure CAD background.

Can you take more than one?

Yes, and a fair number of students do, just not usually at the same time. The most common path we see is BIM Architecture first, then Structure or MEP once someone knows which discipline they’re actually working toward professionally. Interior Design Course and BIM Interior pair well together too, if you want both the design thinking and the software skill — design fundamentals first tends to make the Revit side click faster, since you already understand what you’re trying to model and why. There’s no penalty for taking this in stages rather than trying to figure out your entire five-year plan before enrolling in anything.

A few more honest answers

Can I switch programs after I’ve already started one? Yes — this comes up more than you’d think. If you’re partway through BIM Architecture and realize structural work is actually what you’re drawn to, we’ll help you move into BIM Structure rather than have you force your way through something that isn’t clicking.

Is BIM Interior harder than the Interior Design Course, or the other way around? Neither is “harder” — they’re testing different skills. BIM Interior is technically demanding in the way any Revit course is (you’re learning software mechanics). The Interior Design Course is conceptually demanding — space planning and material decisions don’t have a single correct answer the way a modeling command does, which some students find more challenging in a completely different way.

What if my background doesn’t match any of these cleanly? Talk to us before assuming you don’t fit. We’ve had career-changers with no construction or design background at all start in BIM Architecture and do fine — the programs are built to take people from wherever they’re actually starting, not from an assumed baseline.

Do I need both BIM Interior and the Interior Design Course to work in interiors professionally? Not necessarily, but it depends on the kind of interior work you want to do. If you’re aiming to be the person developing the concept and space plan, the Interior Design Course covers that on its own. If you also need to produce coordinated Revit documentation yourself rather than handing sketches to someone else, BIM Interior fills that specific gap.

If you’re still stuck

Genuinely, just ask before you enroll in the wrong one. We’d rather spend five minutes figuring out which program actually matches what you do — or want to do — than have someone sit through six weeks of a course that wasn’t the right fit.

A couple of things people ask us at this exact stage, worth answering here rather than making you message us for them: no, you don’t need to have decided your entire career path to enroll — plenty of BIM Architecture students are still figuring that out, and the course is built to work either way. And no, switching programs later isn’t a failure or a wasted enrollment — we’d genuinely rather someone start in BIM Architecture, realize structural work is where their interest actually is, and move into BIM Structure next, than force a decision up front that doesn’t hold up once they’re actually in the software.
